The Steelers FINALLY get a takeaway, in fact, they get two, AND they get the win. Coincidence? Nope. I don't think so.
The game opened with problems. First, newly signed tackle Levi Brown injures a tricep in warmups giving Beachum the start. To say Beachum was being abused the first few series is an understatement. In fact, Ben was hurried and sacked in the first half. I immediately thought, great, this isn't going to go well.
The only think that looked great early in the game was Bill Cowher keeping Phil Simms in line in the booth. (Bring him back, please!)
Then the defense started to click.
And this happened.
And just in case, that's not enough to in the words of Mikey from the KISS FM morning show, " I would have vomited chicken and biscuits, blood and my spleen if Troy hit me that hard," here's another view.
So, in other defensive news, Ryan Clark gets a takeaway as does Lawrence Timmons.
Who knew Timmons could run that fast? My guess is he played both sides of the ball in high school and was reliving some of that offense.
What did we learn the first half about the offense? Screens don't work. At least not on every down. I haven't been on the #FireHaley bandwagon, but I have to admit, they way they opened the game made me reconsider.
During the second half, though, the Steelers started to really look like a smooth offense when they used more play action. Ben threw 23/30 for 264 yards and 1 TD (Emmanuel Sanders 55 yard TD, WIDE OPEN!) The difference here was the receivers were able to get more separation. Ben threw more deep balls and was successful. He relied on his comfort with Heath Miller and Heath had 6 catches for 84 yards, second only to Antonio Brown who had 9 receptions for 86 yards. They looked much more comfortable and on the same page throughout the second half.
In contrast, the Jets looked consistently inconsistent. Geno is going to be a good quarterback, hopefully the New York fans give him a shot, because he will be good. He threw 19/34 for 201 yards and 2 interceptions, which were a problem. He also overthrew a receiver wide open with no one between him and the endzone.
Meanwhile, this game lit a fire for the Steelers. If they continue with the groove they found in the second half of the game, they can win.
Overall, a win was great for both the team and the fans.
Next week is Ravens week. Physical, tough. I hope the O-Line is ready because Suggs is having a great season so far getting at QBs.
